VoIP is the technique used by modern digital phones to connect. A VoIP phone can connect directly to another VoIP phone or an analogue phone. The usual term for copper wire based phones is POTS or Plain Old Telephone Service.

Digital

A VoIP phone digitizes your speech, compresses it as digital data and sends it across the internet to the recipient’s phone. Since the data is digital, it can be treated the same way as data which means that you can have an app on your mobile telephone or computer which you can use for making and taking telephone calls.
